Clara’s on the River opened in downtown Battle Creek in 1992 at the former Michigan Central Railroad Depot. The restaurant announced it would end operations on Sept. 6, citing rising food and energy costs, competition from national chains in the Battle Creek area and the price of maintaining its 35-year-old HVAC system.

Bronson Milk Bank began 20 years ago in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to reduce the risk of serious intestinal disease in premature babies. One of only a few milk banks in Michigan, it has since expanded to provide donated breast milk to newborns whose parents are unable to provide their own, and now supplies milk to 23 hospitals in Michigan and 11 outside the state.

Study to examine the future of Athens dams

A new study will explore what to do with the dams and mill pond along Nottawa Creek in Athens, where aging infrastructure presents financial and environmental challenges. The Calhoun Conservation District received grant funding for the study, which begins this fall.
