Two Soups wins Walk the Beat 2026 among competitors from across Michigan

Albion’s Walk the Beat music festival raises money each year to provide instruments to children who cannot afford them while promoting music and literacy. Michigan Center-based Two Soups and the Salad Bar took home the festival’s $2,000 prize money.

New system connects Calhoun Co. dispatchers to school cameras

Calhoun County 911 dispatchers can now access more than 1,000 security cameras during emergencies at 52 public and charter schools across the county. The project was supported by a $1.7 million federal grant, and officials say dispatchers will not routinely monitor or record the camera feeds.

Housing shortage drives tax breaks for new Battle Creek apartments despite pushback

On Sept. 1, Battle Creek city commissioners voted 7-2 to approve tax incentives for a 240-unit apartment complex across from Lakeview High School on Helmer Road. The $49 million project will include 48 apartments designated as affordable housing. More than two dozen residents raised concerns about traffic, student safety and public money for the project.

Albion College’s Kresge Gymnasium celebrates 100 years

Albion College’s Kresge Gymnasium is marking its 100th anniversary following a major renovation in 2025. The project, supported by a $1 million gift from alumni Julie Serra and other donors, added new locker rooms, bleachers and updated the lobby. Kresge Gymnasium opened in 1925, three years after the previous gym burned down.
