$1.7M Mars grant supports food access in Battle Creek

Food access in Battle Creek was strengthened with a $500,000 contribution from the Mars Snacking Foundation to the Equitable Well-Being and Food Access Fund. The fund supports programs such as emergency food assistance, fresh food distribution and senior nutrition programs. The contribution is part of $1.7 million in grants from the Mars Snacking Foundation to programs in Calhoun County.
Early in-person voting begins July 25 for the Aug. 4 primary

Two locations will offer early in-person voting in Calhoun County from Saturday, July 25 through Sunday, Aug. 2 for the Aug. 4 primary. Residents of the cities of Battle Creek and Springfield, as well as Bedford and Pennfield Charter Townships, can vote 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Kool Family Community Center in Battle Creek. All other Calhoun County residents can vote between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Marshall County Building in Marshall.
Albion honors Vera Simpson with street designation

Jefferson Street in Albion will now feature the name of “longtime community visionary” Vera Simpson, whose work was influential in education, neighborhood revitalization, community gardening, preservation of Black history, mentoring and community service in Albion.

The Ford Future Builders Labs in Marshall Public Schools will transition into high-impact learning centers with recent grants to Innovate Albion to hire two full-time STEM coordinators to provide hands-on instruction in all four elementary schools. The grants are from the Marshall Community Foundation and Cronin Foundation.
