Communities across Calhoun County are preparing to mark the United States Semiquincentennial on July 4, 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Here are some upcoming events tied to the celebration:
Battle Creek
Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival
Battle Creek’s largest summer festival returns July 1-5 at Battle Creek Executive Airport with an America’s 250th celebration theme. The event includes air shows July 2-5, hot-air balloons, fireworks, drone shows, carnival rides, live music, food and craft vendors and the Battle Creek Half Marathon and 5K.
Parking is cash only.

Salute to Veterans Concert and Picnic
Battle Creek VA Medical Center will host a Salute to Veterans Concert and Picnic on July 7. The event is free, but reservations are required.

Battle Creek Regional History Museum: “The Presidents: In Their Own Words”
The Battle Creek Regional History Museum is featuring The Presidents: In Their Own Words, an exhibit by Battle Creek artist Richard Schlatter celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The exhibit features typographic portraits of 15 U.S. presidents created using words from their inaugural addresses and signature speeches. It will remain on display through the summer and fall. Learn more at bcrhm.org.

Red, White & Blue Cruise-In Car Show
The 26th Annual Red, White & Blue Cruise-In Car Show is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. July 3 on Superior Street in downtown Albion.
Registration is free in advance or the day of the event, with check-in beginning at 3 p.m

Fourth of July Celebration Fireworks Show
Albion’s Fourth of July Celebration Fireworks Show is scheduled for dusk Friday, July 3, over Barnes Park, 400 Water St. The fireworks are listed for 9:45-10:15 p.m.
Marshall
Pet, Bike and Wagon Parade
The Oaklawn Pet, Bike and Wagon Parade begins at 10 a.m. July 4 at Marshall Fountain Circle. Children ages 1-12 are invited to decorate their pets, bikes and wagons in red, white and blue for the annual Independence Day tradition. Participation is free.
Register at oaklawnhospital.org or beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
Chicken BBQ at the Fountain
The annual Fourth of July Chicken BBQ begins at 10 a.m. July 4 at Marshall’s Fountain Circle. Presented by Mitts to Pits Catering, meals are $13 for chicken and $8 for hot dogs. No presale tickets are available. The Marshall Rotary Band is scheduled to perform at 11 a.m.
Cruise at the Fountain
The 40th Cruise at the Fountain is scheduled for July 3-4 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds, 720 Fair St., Marshall. The two-day event features classic cars, vintage campers, motorcycles, a swap meet, craft show, vendors, kids Matchbox drag racing, awards and more.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 for ages 13 and older, while children 12 and younger, veterans and active-duty military get in free.

American Flags Walking Tour
Choose Marshall’s American Flags Walking Tour is a self-guided tour through downtown Marshall that uses the evolution of the American flag to tell parts of the nation’s history, from the Revolutionary War and Civil War to World War II. The tour highlights the 27 official versions of the flag since 1776, flag symbolism and proper flag etiquette.
The tour will be displayed downtown through November. A mobile-friendly map can be found here or at choosemarshall.com.
Athens
Annual Homecoming and 250th Celebration
Athens will mark the United States’ 250th anniversary with a USA theme during its Annual Homecoming Celebration July 24-25.
The downtown celebration includes two free concerts: Motown Eagles at 7 p.m. July 24 and Moonshot at 6 p.m. July 25. Food trucks are also planned, and there will be USA-themed floats in the parade.
